Players around the SAHL have been fearing and preparing for the worst, a cancellation of the entire 2009 Stephenville Area Hockey League season. The long standing ball hockey circuit (set to enter its 7th season; 9th if the KHL is considered) has fallen onto hard times entering this summer and that is due to several reasons.

First, the Stephenville Chiefs, an SAHL "All-Star" team of sorts took part in the PlayOn! tournament held in St. John's late in June. Planning and practicing for the province-wide competition took precedent over the upcomiing SAHL season, which fell to the wayside.

Second, the Kippens Ball Hockey League (Bud Light League) took over the Tennis Court several weekends, preventing the SAHL from getting and pavement.

Third, the search for players is ongoing as many of the SAHL's players have decided not to return this season.

The Plan: The SAHL plans on holding a one or two day tournament at some point in August. The schedule will most likely be two consecutive Sunday's later in the month. The SAHL will look to field as many as 5 teams if possible for the event with the prize being the Bay St. George Cup.
The Stephenville Area Hockey League is planning on moving ahead with a season in 2009. To make this possible we are going to new blood. The SAHL is therefore actively recruting new players to fill out its rosters for the 2009 tournament. Based of the number of players made available to the league, rosters may be expanded or new teams created. Regardless, the league is looking for any players willing to step out onto the tennis court pavement and compete for the Bay St. George, which has been awarded to the top road hockey team in the area since 2004.

Be part of the next bench clearing brawl or championship team and make use of the wasted time on Sunday evenings that you'll otherwise spend doing...not much.
